How do we define effectiveness in the context of summer learning? What are ways to evaluate summer learning opportunities? Please join us to discuss these issues with Ron Fairchild, CEO of the National Summer Learning Association, and Zakia Redd, Research Scientist at Child Trends. As part of the program, we will also receive an update on 2010 summer learning opportunities for Baltimore students and discuss how funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) might be used locally to expand the availability of quality summer learning programs. Following the program, Ms. Redd will be available for an extended discussion about evaluating summer learning programs until 2pm.

Family Philanthropy Teleconference: The Right Ways to Handle Conflicts of Interest

National Center research shows that only about half of family foundations have a conflict of interest policy. Yet conflicts often arise if, for example, a board or staff member volunteers for or serves on the board of a nonprofit that seeks funds from the foundation. Two of our speakers, Diana Gurieva, Executive Vice President and CEO of the Dyson Foundation, and Mary Mountcastle, a trustee of both the Mary Reynolds Babcock and Z. Smith Reynolds Foundations, will share how their foundations have dealt with conflicts of interest. They'll be joined by Kelley Simone, Senior Staff Attorney at the Council on Foundations.

Please join us to discuss Maryland's Race to the Top (RTTT) proposal with Mary Cary, Assistant State Superintendent in MSDE's Division of Leadership Development and MSDE point person for RTTT. We will learn what the State is planning to propose and what supports are needed to produce the best possible RTTT plan by the June 1st deadline. We will also discuss ways that the philanthropic community might be helpful to the State and the City with this and other federal opportunities.
