"Charitable Giving - Shape Up...Live Well"

The Daily Record

A new grants program is tackling obesity—the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States and the source of nearly $100 billion a year in health care spending among American adults.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield recently announced Shape Up … Live Well, a grants program in its service areas of Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. The program aims to prevent obesity and its associated health risks in adults and children through innovative programs that promote physical activity and/or a healthy lifestyle.

CareFirst has dedicated $500,000 to be granted in 2004 in amounts ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. “Obesity and sedentary lifestyles are escalating to epidemic proportions with an estimated 64 percent of U.S. adults who are either overweight or obese according to the Centers for Disease Control,” said CareFirst President and CEO William L. Jews.

“CareFirst is committed to partnering with groups who have programs that address this dangerous trend and health threat.” Physical inactivity and high-calorie, low-cost foods are two major environmental factors that contribute to the growing obesity problem. And in addition, childhood obesity raises great concern, as 9 million children today are seriously overweight — three times the rate in 1970.

Obesity prevention can be achieved through a number of avenues including the promotion of fitness, wellness, active lifestyles, clinical interventions, prevention screenings and health education. Through this grants program, CareFirst hopes to mobilize the community to help children, adolescents and adults reduce the onset of obesity through behavior modification and educational outreach.

Grants will be awarded to local or statewide organizations or groups to implement programs in the CareFirst service area. Grant activity may be targeted to children or adults without serious health related conditions, or who are not overweight or obese, but who may be at risk for obesity or future health problems without modification to their current lifestyle.

Programs which target children, teens and adolescents are of particular interest, and programs may be aimed at groups or individuals but must emphasize long-term behavior modification and health improvement. Eligible programs may have clinical components, although grant funds should not go toward activities that would likely be covered by health insurance — unless the target population is uninsured.

Public Health Departments are ineligible to receive grants, but may partner with an eligible nonprofit organization. Universities (with the exception of Schools of Nursing), research institutes, and for-profit organizations are not eligible to apply under this initiative.

The deadline for the submission of proposals is Tuesday, May 11, 2004. For additional information, contact (410) 998-5669 or obesityrfp@carefirst.com
