"Charitable Giving - While You're Passing the Turkey, Take a Minute to Reflect"

Many families share a Thanksgiving tradition in which each person at the dinner table is asked to share what he or she is thankful for. It's a tradition that my family enjoys — a moment for us all to pause and reflect on the good — and sometimes not so good — things that have happened during the past year.

But even when the year seems to be peppered with more challenges than one would hope for, the reasons to give thanks are plentiful.

This year, I took a step back and reflected on the wonderful organizations and institutions that impacted my family over the course of the last year. I would like to share this list with you. For me, it's notable how the work of nonprofit organizations is woven throughout different aspects of my life.

Health

We all seem to take for granted our health until we find ourselves in need of medical care, and this year serious medical issues affected more than one member of my family.

So, to all the warm, caring, and very competent doctors, nurses, and administrators at Mercy Medical Center and the University of North Carolina Medical Center, I give my sincere gratitude.

Compassion

Compassion is a value that I hold dear and have hoped to instill in my children. As they are now young adults, I stand in awe of all they do and all they have become.

To Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Connecticut, I thank you for giving my daughter, a busy professional, the opportunity to connect with a young woman in need of support.

By enabling my daughter to engage in a meaningful way in someone else's life, you have enriched her life, too. To Heads Up – DC, I offer thanks for providing a safe haven for youngsters in the after-school hours and for exposing young idealistic staffers, like my middle daughter, to the challenges of making a difference in this world. We need that next generation of nonprofit leaders.

Promise of education I believe that education holds the key to one's future. So, I salute the corps members of Teach for America-Baltimore for having the vision that one day all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

As a board member for this organization, I am constantly reminded that we have an army of individuals who put their diverse talents to work in our schools every day.

Civic pride

Additionally, I am grateful to the Live Baltimore Home Center for allowing me to finally be a cheerleader, if not for a high-school sports team, for my home team.

These are just a few of the ways that nonprofit organizations have touched my family in the last year. Nonprofit organizations truly enrich our lives and make a difference in areas ranging from the finest medical care to innovative solutions to complex social problems.

As you reflect this Thanksgiving and holiday season, I ask you to consider those individuals and organizations that have made your life better. And, to give thanks.
