"Study: More Forming Groups to Give Back"

A trend in the way Americans, particularly women, raise money for charity has taken hold in Greater Baltimore, a new study shows.
More people are pooling their resources by forming giving circles to collectively support community development.
Giving circles, which range from informal gatherings of a group of friends to national networks functioning as their own nonprofit, have collected more than $44 million nationally since 2000.
In Greater Baltimore, 12 giving circles have raised more than $1 million over the last several years. The report, "Giving Together," conducted by New Ventures in Philanthropy, describes what giving circles look like nationwide. More than 200 giving circles were identified nationally and 77 were surveyed.
The authors say the report is a conservative estimate of the presence of the groups, representing only 10 percent of giving circles nationwide. "The findings also give us a better understanding of how successful giving circles get started and are sustained over time, so we can help others get engaged in this activity," said Tracey Rutnick, director of strategic initiatives at the association and co-author of the report, in a news release.
Giving circles vary in structure, size and charitable focus. The study found that the majority, 57 percent, of the groups are women-only or majority female, while about 42 percent have a mix of men and women. About 12 percent are racially or ethnically diverse, and 5 percent are African-American.
Some of the first giving circles began in the 1990s as a result of increased participation of women in philanthropy, the rise in new donors and increased desire of individuals to participate in the giving process, the association says.
The following are examples of Baltimore-area giving circles:
- Women's Giving Circle of Howard County, a group of more than 350 women, has donated almost $400,000 over the past three years to programs for women and girls in the county.
- The Baltimore Women's Giving Circle, which has 180 members, has contributed more than $300,000 over the past three years to projects in Greater Baltimore that support the self-sufficiency of women and their families. The circle requires an annual contribution of $1,100.
- The B'More Fund, which has about 45 members, has raised $35,000. The group awards donations to social entrepreneurs in the region and requires an annual contribution of $500 a year.
- The Jewish Women's Initiative at the Associated: Jewish Community Federation has donated $25,000 since 2003. The group has 34 members and requires a two-year commitment and $1,000 annually.
