Earthquake Relief Efforts for India and Pakistan

For our donors and others who would like to contribute to relief efforts in the region affected by the earthquake, the Baltimore Community Foundation recommends the following organizations currently working to provide emergency supplies and aid:

Focusing on the needs of the most vulnerable survivors, AmeriCares is airlifting essential medicines, antibiotics, anti-fungals, oral rehydration solutions, basic medial supplies and trauma care to the region. AmeriCares will work with partner LIFE for Relief and Development to distribute the supplies to 13 hospitals in the affected region.

Doctors Without Borders is providing medical assistance and relief goods to the victims of the earthquake in Pakistan and India. Teams are focusing on medical assistance, mental health counseling and the distribution of relief and medical supplies, including winterized tents, jerry cans, sleeping mats, water purification materials, hygiene kits and blankets.

Give2Asia has created the South Asia Earthquake Fund to support near- and long-term rebuilding needs in the regions most affected by the earthquake through programs identified by on-the-ground staff. The fund will provide resources to local nonprofits, faith-based organizations and government agencies. The Asia Foundation, Give2Asia's founder, has more than 50 years of experience in Pakistan building more effective democratic governance and empowering its citizens, especially women, to be engaged in decision-making. Give2Asia's partnership with The Asia Foundation ensures that contributions will be allocated appropriately and efficiently.

International Rescue Committee emergency teams are delivering emergency supplies, administering critical medical care and counseling services and beginning crucial water and sanitation assistance in hard-to-access villages and hamlets in quake-ravaged areas of Pakistan.

Oxfam America is a Boston-based international development and relief agency and an affiliate of Oxfam International. Working with local partners, Oxfam delivers development programs and emergency relief services, and campaigns for change in global practices and policies that keep people in poverty. Oxfam has staff in the region working with local partners and has begun supplying emergency aid to thousands affected by the earthquake, including introducing a new, innovative shelter design. Four aid flights have been sent containing water tanks, blankets, winter clothing, and materials for temporary shelter.

Scores of Save the Children aid workers provide thousands of blankets, tents, and articles of clothing as well as food, water, health care and other essentials to thousands of children and families who survived the earthquake in northern Pakistan and India. Save the Children is about to launch a food program expected to reach as many as 187,000 people affected by the earthquake.

For those who have survived the earthquake, rains, snows and plummeting temperatures are an increasing threat that as the winter approaches, thousands of children could die due to cold weather, lack of shelter, injury and disease. UNICEF has been able to provide urgently needed items including 300,000 water purification tablets, 375 cartons of nutritional biscuits, 500 tents, 12,000 rolls of tarpaulin, 100,000 blankets and 12,000 sweaters. More supplies are on their way. Trucks and helicopters are fighting severe weather to distribute the items to remote areas, and are bringing injured children to hospitals for treatment.

Responding to the enormous demand for shelter in quake-hit Pakistan, which needs in excess of 600,000 tents, World Vision is airlifting in more than 4,000 tents and over 12,000 tarpaulins this week. World Vision is developing plans and proposals to preposition food in its bases and implement various activities that meet the basic needs of some 15,000 families, with an average of five people, and also help clean up affected areas and restore basic services through food for work activities.
